Notary Questions
What identification is required for notarization?
Every signer must present a valid, original, government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a current driver's license, state ID, or passport. The ID must be unexpired and clearly show the signer’s photo and signature.
How long does a notarization usually take?
Most standard notarizations are brief and often take less than 20 minutes for a single-signature document. More complex documents, multiple signers, or additional verification steps may take longer.
What is the difference between in-person notarization, mobile notarization, and remote online notarization?
In-person notarization takes place at a designated location. Mobile notarization brings the notary to the client. Remote online notarization (RON) is completed through secure audio-video technology, allowing signers to appear remotely while the notary is physically present in Illinois.
How does remote online notarization work?
RON uses secure audio-video technology and identity verification methods such as credential analysis and knowledge-based authentication. Once the signer is verified, the document is signed and sealed electronically during the virtual session.
Do you offer electronic notarization?
Yes. Fayrelyâ„¢ Services offers electronic notary services and remote online notarization where permitted. Electronic services include a technology fee as listed on the site.

What is an apostille?
An apostille is a certificate used to authenticate a document for international use in countries that recognize the Hague Apostille Convention. It verifies the signature or seal of a public official so the document can be accepted abroad.
What types of documents may need an apostille?
Documents such as birth certificates, transcripts, powers of attorney, and other legal or personal records may require apostille authentication depending on the destination country and purpose.
